Water Sports-Windsurfing

"Windsurfing is a surface water sport using windsurf board usually two to five meters long and powered by a single sail. The rig is connected to the board by a free-rotating flexible joint called the U-Joint."

Windsurfing is always known as a young sport due to the history which says, there was a young man called Newman Darby first came up the idea of windsurfing structure in 1948 and in a twenty years time, sailor Jim Drake and surfer Holy Schweitzer got together and showed us the naissance of windsurfing.

Windsurfing can be played either in light-wind sailing or high-wind sailing. Based on its function and size, there are 4 types of windsurfing, race sails, slalom sails and wave sails. Usually, people use a big windsurfing sail in lighter winds while a small windsurfing sail is used when the wind is strong.

Singapore as an island country consists of the main island and some 63 islets within its territorial waters is a decent place to windsurf. Though the wind here is not as good as that in other renowned destinations in the world, Singapore is still considered as a good location for windsurfing, especially during the two monsoon seasons where the wind picks up to about 12 knots.(the SW monsoon is from July-Oct & the NE monsoon is in end of Dec-Feb)

If you are a big fan of windsurfing or a beginner, windsurfing clubs must be a great place for you. There are three windsurfing bars on East Coast in Singapore. They are Pasta Fresca sailing club, People's Association Sea Sports Club, SAFRA Sea Sports Club.

*People’s Association Sea Sports Club provides beginners courses, windsurfer hire (Mistral Prodigy & Fanatic ~245Litre wide style boards), and has storage facilities (boards S$30 per month, sail w/o boom S$5 per month.
